The winter population of these animals numbers about 250 (Save The Bay 2000); during colder months, they can be seen hauled out on rocks throughout the Bay. The seals have become the foundation for ecotourism activities; Save The Bay and the Rose Island Lighthouse Foundation, in particular, host winter “seal watch” tours out of Newport.
